Mens Blackwork Shirt
A reproduction of the embroidery on a mans shirt held in the collection of Museum of Costume in Bath was commissioned. The original shirt dates from c1585-1600.
The commission did not include the making of the shirt, which was to be done by the client.
Research was undertaken to ascertain the exact dimensions and composition of the embroidery on the shirt. The curators at the Museum of Bath were most helpful in providing access to the conservation records for this item.
For this project only the embroidery on the collar, cuffs and around the neck-opening was to be completed. Unlike to original the embroidery was to be worked in blue silk rather than the original black. The embroidery on the garment is extremely fine, a similar guage silk thread was identified and obtained.
